Strand 01 of 06 on the highway
Sustainability Awareness
Understand your impacts, risks and opportunities.
Building understanding of sustainability, impacts, risks and opportunities.
Every journey on the highway starts with awareness. This strand builds an understanding of sustainability across your whole organisation, from the board to the shop floor, so that everyone knows what your impacts are and what risks and opportunities come with them.
What is sustainability awareness?

Benefits of Sustainability Awareness
- Help your team recognise sustainability risks and opportunities in everyday decisions.
- Reduce blind spots that could affect operations, costs, or reputation.
- Give staff clearer responsibilities and practical steps they can take.
- Build a shared understanding of how sustainability supports business resilience.

Why sustainability awareness matters
Sustainability is not just for the board, everyone in an organisation needs to be aware of sustainability issues, including middle managers and everyone on the shop floor, because awareness affects behaviour. Once your people understand what is causing climate change, and the wider issues around it, you can move on to measuring and identifying your impacts.
- Sustainability is broader than the environment. It has three pillars:
- Economic pillar covers issues such as corruption and taxes.
- The environmental pillar covers your effect on the environment.
- The social pillar covers people, including training and data protection.
Awareness gives your organisation a shared understanding of all three parts and how they link together. It also gives your sustainability work a direction. Many organisations are already doing good things, but they cannot say where that work is leading.
That’s brilliant, but where are you going? Surely we have to have a destination.
Professor Ven Tauringana
In many countries across the globe, awareness of net zero is still very low. When Professor Ven presented to companies at a recent event, the organisations that spoke throughout the day described valuable work, but not a single person mentioned net zero, and nobody seemed to realise there was such a thing.
There is currently no regulatory requirement to run sustainability awareness training. It is, however, something organisations need to do, and it is the first strand on the highway.
Who this service is for
Our services are designed for organisations. Individuals are welcome to attend our training, but the organisations we work with most closely include:
- companies listed in Zimbabwe;
- state-owned enterprises
- organisations with a high environmental impact, such as those in mining and farming.
Within each organisation, awareness training is for everyone: the board, senior managers and all staff.
How we deliver sustainability awareness training
We offer three sustainability awareness courses, each designed for a different level of your organisation. Every course can be delivered in person, remotely or online.
- Sustainability for Strategic Leadership, for the board of directors. Delivered in person or remotely over 4 hours, or online over 3 hours.
- Operationalising Sustainability: From Awareness to Net Zero, for senior managers. Delivered in person over 7 hours, remotely over 6 hours, or online over 5 hours.
- Sustainability in Action: What It Means for You and Your Organisation, for all staff. Delivered in person or remotely over 4 hours, or online over 3 hours.
Our webinar series, The Highway to Organisational Prosperity Through Sustainability, is a good place to start. The first session is a 30-minute overview of all six strands of the highway, and later sessions look at each strand in more detail, beginning with awareness. You can find out more on our Speaking Engagements page.
How we help you put awareness into practice
Training is the first route. If you then want awareness implemented across your organisation, our consulting service supports that implementation.
Our consulting for this strand covers organisation-wide sustainability awareness and engagement.

Where sustainability awareness sits on your journey
Sustainability awareness is the first stage of The Highway to Organisational Prosperity Through Sustainability. Once everyone in your organisation is aware, the next step is Sustainability and ESG Reporting, where you measure and identify your social, environmental and economic impacts.
You do not have to start at the beginning, you can join the highway at the junction that fits where your organisation is today, build capability, and advance towards organisational prosperity. Sustainability runs throughout the journey, and organisational prosperity is the destination.
Book a consultation to talk about awareness across your organisation, or see our training services for course details. Professor Ven can also speak to your board or wider team about sustainability awareness.
